Frequently asked questions

When installing, allow for play in the pivot points, i.e. avoid rigid installation. If necessary, lubricate the pivot points to minimise friction and increase the service life of the connections. Any loose connections must be completely unscrewed before installation. If vibrations occur, the connections must be secured against twisting by gluing them in place.

Any protective film must be removed before installing the products.

Installation and storage:

Gas springs with the piston rod pointing downwards
Gas tension springs with the piston rod pointing upwards
Damper with the piston rod facing downwards

If the linkage is reversed and installed horizontally, suitable versions must be used. In this case, please consult us. Pressure losses due to storage at room temperature are not to be expected, but the products should not be stored for longer than one year. When the products are actuated for the first time after a long period of inactivity, a sticking effect may occur (slip-stick effect), which means that higher forces are required to retract or extend the piston rod.

Gas struts, gas springs and dampers are not safety parts! They are locking products and must therefore be replaced depending on the load and area of application.

Gas springs must be protected from corrosion in particular in order to increase their service life and fatigue strength.

Small amounts of hydraulic oil may escape from the products; these must not come into contact with food or groundwater. Gas springs with biodegradable oil are available at an extra charge.

The standard series and connection variants are shown in our product documentation. We reserve the right to make technical changes!
Other special series and connection parts as well as release mechanisms for lockable gas springs are available on request.

If gas springs, gas traction springs or dampers are used where failure of the product could lead to personal injury and/or damage to property, additional safety elements must be used! The installation/removal of gas springs must always be carried out in compliance with the accident prevention regulations.

Gas springs are filled with pure nitrogen. Nitrogen is an inert gas, does not burn, does not explode and is non-toxic.
Gas springs have a very high internal pressure and must therefore never be opened!

Avoid tilting the piston rod. For long strokes, the gas spring must be additionally supported/guided. Sagging, bending or buckling must be avoided.

Gas pressure springs, gas tension springs and dampers may be used as end stops if the nominal force +30 % is not exceeded (no overwinding or compression of the product). Additional mechanical stops should be fitted, especially for high forces, to prevent compression or over-rotation.

Bauckhage gas springs can be used at ambient temperatures from -20°C to +80°C. Special sealing kits are available for other temperature ranges (down to -45°C or up to +220°C).

Do not overheat gas springs or expose them to open fire!

Gas traction springs are open systems, i.e. dirt or other media must be prevented from entering the traction springs through the vent holes at the end of the cylinder. During installation, it must be ensured that the tension springs are not installed in closed systems, but in ventilated systems in which the formation of condensation due to temperature fluctuations is ruled out!

Lockable gas springs have a tube as a piston rod in which a release pin is located. Foreign substances such as dirt or cleaning agents must be prevented from entering the piston rod bore. This can lead to corrosion in the piston rod and jamming of the release pin. Lockable gas springs should preferably be installed with the piston rod facing downwards. If lockable gas springs are used where they come into contact with cleaning agents (e.g. hospital beds), this must be specified when ordering. Max. Max. number of release confirmations approx. 30,000.

No warranty is given for installation suggestions/drawings for the installation of throttle compression springs, throttle cable springs and dampers. It is essential to note that not all installation parameters can be included in the theoretical suggestion and therefore extreme care must be taken in practice during installation, as friction values and accelerations cannot be taken into account in the theoretical suggestion or can only be taken into account approximately.
The installation or use of gas springs should always be tested by the user, as not all parameters can be simulated or tested in-house.

Maximum pressure = 160 bar (20°C.)

Maximum lifting speed = 300 mm/s when installed.

Caution:
High stroke speeds and stroke frequencies lead to overheating and thus to damage to the seals and product failure.

General length tolerance of the products = +/- 2 mm.

The tolerance for extension and retraction forces is generally a maximum of +/- 10% of the nominal force (20°C). The nominal force is measured statically at the end of the extended stroke (for tension springs at the end of the retracted stroke) 5 mm before the end of the stroke.
The release force for lockable gas springs is approx. 18% of the nominal force of the gas spring.

Service life under optimum operating conditions:

  • Gas struts and dampers approx. 10 km stroke
  • Gas traction springs approx. stroke 2 km

The gas springs are filled at room temperature (20°C). As the gas pressure is temperature-dependent, the spring force changes according to the ambient temperature by approx. 1% for every 3°C.

Example for force:
F1 = 1000 Newton:
+ 35°C / + 5% = 1050 N
- 10°D / -10% = 900 N

Disposal:
Gas springs are mainly made of metal and can be recycled.
The gas springs must be depressurised beforehand. Oil may have to be drained and disposed of separately.

Please request our disposal instructions if required.

Bauckhage gas springs are manufactured to order. Cancellation, subsequent changes, exchanges or returns are therefore not possible.

Warranty:
The warranty period is a maximum of 1 year from the date of manufacture printed on the products.
For your warranty claim, the date of manufacture must remain recognisable even after any repainting of the pressure pipe. Failure to observe our instructions and recommendations will invalidate the guarantee!

Minor damage, corrosion or paint residue on the piston rod will destroy the seal and cause the spring to fail. The cylinder barrel must not be damaged or deformed!

All modifications to the product by third parties will invalidate the warranty.
